Fashion was in the local spotlight when industry professionals and representatives from trade promotion agencies gathered at the Bagnall’s Point Gallery, Pelican Craft Centre on Sunday, August 23, 2009 for the launch of the Fashion and Design Association of Barbados. Minister of Culture, the Honorable Steven Blackett, delivered the feature address at this timely event and lauded the BCSI for its developmental work in the creative sector.  Recognizing the considerable export potential of the fashion and design sector, the Barbados Coalition of Service Industries Inc., the Barbados Investment Development Corporation, Invest Barbados and Caribbean Export Development Agency, are working with industry professionals to ensure that the association is export-focused and caters to the training and development needs of its members. Fashion designers had the unique opportunity to upgrade their skills at Professional Development Workshops from August 24-26, 2009. The launch featured fashion from some of the association’s members, including jewellery from Four Seasons Colonnade and Angelique Creations. One Body Rosca showcased men’s line; The Fifth Element, Sharon James Prêt-à -Porter and Paju showcased formal, semi-formal and business wear respectively, and Barefoot Diva presented a casual Caribbean esthetic. Two major aims of the Fashion and Design Association are to educate its members about the export potential of the fashion and design sector, and to position the sector to make a significant contribution to the local economy.
