BRIDGETOWN BARBADOS, FRIDAY, JULY 09. As further efforts are made to aid earthquake ravaged Haiti the Caribbean Association of Industry and Commerce (CAIC) in collaboration with the CARICOM Secretariat and regional private sector stakeholders are spearheading an intervention.

A CARICOM Private Sector forum will be held in Haiti from July 26-29 is the ideal opportunity to learn about the markets and establish important strategic alliances within the Haitian private sector in the regions reconstruction effort. Though it is evident that the construction sector is needed in this project, there are also opportunities for the other sectors. Companies and organizations in the distribution, agriculture, professional services and tourism sectors all have a chance in benefiting from this initiative.

The agenda of the visit outlines planned cross-sector meetings where participants can learn of the action plan for Haiti and the country’s specific post disaster needs, the donor efforts to date and the proposed bidding procedure for the private sector. Further, tours of facilities and project sites around the island and business meetings are also scheduled to take place. This action comes as the Interim Haitian Reconstruction Commission (IHRC) is attempting to make strides to intensify the reconstruction efforts. This commission is responsible for developing the reconstruction plans and ensuring that they are aligned with the Action Plan for National Recovery and Development of Haiti. These efforts are expected to yield significant benefits for business owners and companies throughout CARICOM.

These efforts are being intensified as the 2010 hurricane season approaches as many Haitians were displaced after a catastrophic earthquake on January 12.
